Dust mites are small-sized insects that thrive in warm and humid places particularly in bedding, carpeting and upholstered furniture. For those who are allergic to dust mites, the usual effects include nasal issues, itchy eyes, facial pressure, dizziness and asthma-like reactions.
An allergy to dust mites involves a reaction of the immune system to fight the byproducts of the insect. An allergist can establish if the individual is allergic and suggest suitable treatment options.
Nasal issues
Once the body is experiencing an allergic reaction, it triggers the inflammation of the sinus cavity. The usual effects upon exposure to dust mites include:
- Postnasal drip
- Nasal drainage
- Sneezing
- Congestion
The tender sinus cavity puts weight on the adjoining body parts including the inner ear and upper teeth. The pressure on the inner ear can lead to dizziness and physical imbalance.
Asthma-like reactions
A common effect of dust mite exposure includes asthma-like reactions such as chest tightness, wheezing and difficulty breathing.
If an individual ends up with an asthma attack, it results to dizziness due to the lack of oxygen that reaches the brain. An individual with allergy-induced asthma due to dust mites should consult a doctor regarding allergy shots.
Dizziness
Inhaling the dust mites can result to dizziness. This is due to the surplus buildup of fluid in the ears or pressure from the swollen sinuses. If the individual ends up with significant dizziness, a doctor should be seen since it might be an indication of a serious underlying condition.
Facial pressure
The facial pressure or discomfort is brought about by the inflammation in the sinus cavity. The cheekbones, eyes and forehead might be sensitive to the touch. The pressure can also make the individual feel tired and lethargic. In case facial pressure arises together with facial swelling, seek immediate medical care.
Eye irritation
An allergy to dust mites can trigger eye irritation. Due to the elevated levels of histamine in the bloodstream, the eyes can end up reddened, watery and intensely itchy.
In severe instances, the eyes become swollen and develops a blackish and bluish appearance. This condition is more prevalent among young children. Antihistamine eye drops are administered to relieve the eye irritation.
