What are the causes?

It is important to note that young children and the elderly face a higher risk for developing the disease due to a weakened immune system that could not effectively fight the virus.

The common viruses that can cause the condition include the following:

  • Influenza
    Viral pneumonia
Chest pain that is stabbing or sharp in nature especially if the condition is severe.
  • Adenovirus
  • Rhinovirus
  • Parainfluenza virus
  • Coronavirus
  • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)

Risk factors

There are some individuals or conditions that puts one at higher risk for developing viral pneumonia such as the following:

  • Premature babies
  • Individuals with HIV infection
  • Children suffering from lung and heart conditions
  • Individuals suffering from cancer and under chemotherapy as well as those using medications that weaken the immune system
  • Individuals who have undergone organ transplants

What are the indications of viral pneumonia?

  • Chest pain that is stabbing or sharp in nature especially if the condition is severe
  • Coughing is present and the individual might cough up mucus that is blood-streaked
  • Fever and chills
  • Confusion among the elderly
  • Difficulty breathing during physical activity
  • Profuse sweating with clammy skin
  • Headache
  • Appetite loss
  • Weakness and lethargy

Management

The objective of treatment for viral pneumonia is to alleviate the symptoms and eliminate the infection.

  • Hospitalization is not required and the individual eventually gets better with adequate rest and medications given at home.
  • If dehydration is present, the individual should be admitted to a healthcare facility.
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen can be given to alleviate fever and body aches.
  • Pain medications are given to minimize the chest pain.
  • For relief from coughing, cough medications can be used.
  • The individual should be given more fluids to drink throughout the day.
  • A humidifier must be used especially at night time
