Recurrent Corneal Erosion

How to remedy a sty

Fact Checked

A sty can develop once an oil gland in the lower or upper eyelid ends up infected and swollen. This can develop close to the eyelashes or anywhere on the eyelid.

A small-sized sty typically heals without requiring treatment often within a few weeks. Nevertheless, some types of sty usually those that involve a completely clogged oil gland often become swollen and turn the affected area bright red in appearance. These clogged glands can cause pain and irritation to the eyelid and even push against the eye surface. In cases that do not improve on their own, they might require treatment though most remedies might take time to fully resolve.

Application of heat on a sty

The application of heat on a sty can minimize the swelling and irritation. In some cases, all you have to do is run a towel or cloth under warm water, wring out the excess water and place over the affected area.

If the bump does not respond to the application of heat, medications might be needed.

Take note that the warm compress must rest on the sty for about 10 minutes. Once repeated at least 4 times throughout the day, the swelling often grows smaller in size. If heat seems to help, repeat the process over a few days to relieve the symptoms completely.

Antibiotics

If the bump does not respond to the application of heat, medications might be needed. Since the bump develops due to an infected oil gland, some cases respond to antibiotics that are applied on the exterior of the eyelid. Nevertheless, in most cases, this could not provide quick relief to the swelling and irritation.

The doctor might prescribe antibiotic eye drops to manage the swelling and inflammation. On the other hand, just like with ointments, this might take some time to remedy the sty. Many doctors who prescribe antibiotics might also recommend repeating the application of warm compresses.

When to consult a doctor

If if continues to swell and trigger irritation and if other treatments do not provide remedy, the doctor might drain the sty. The doctor will perform this procedure in a clinic and the procedure usually lasts only a few minutes.

The doctor administers a numbing medication to make the area around the sty numb. The doctor will create a small incision over the sty and clean the oil gland. Once the procedure is completed, the eye might develop extra swelling along with slight bruising but this can heal over a few days.
