Bone spurs: Why is my big toe painful?

Fact Checked

Bone spurs usually develop due to joint or bone conditions such as trauma, osteoarthritis or calcification from overuse. Once a bone or joint is damaged due to degeneration or trauma, the bone spurs forms as an attempt of the body to heal itself. The symptoms are often triggered by the joint or bone condition leading to the growth of the spur such as arthritis of the big toe, not always the bone spurs.

Close look on the big toe joint

If arthritis develops on the big toe, it is called as hallux rigidus. Due to the structure of the feet, the joint positioned at the base of the big toe or metatarsophalangeal joint is prone to develop arthritis than other parts of the foot. This is the reason why big toe arthritis is quite common and often leads to the development of bone spurs in the joint.

What are the symptoms?

The pain that occurs in the base of the big toe is the usual symptom. Always bear in mind that the pain is often aggravated by increased level of activity such as running. There is also diminished joint mobility along with evident swelling around the joint and bump on the top part of the foot.

The doctor will determine whether the joint cartilage of the individual has worn away or if he/she develops bone spurs in the area with the help of an X-ray.

Commonly used conventional treatment measures

The individual should use shoes that have a firm or stiff sole to prevent movement of the big toe joint at the base of the toe. There are also specialized inserts or shoes that can be used to minimize movement as well.

The condition can also be managed by alternating hot and cold packs or baths. Anti-inflammatory medications and pain medications such as ibuprofen can also help in relieving the swelling and pain.

Alternative treatment options

Turmeric has been a traditional medication used in relieving arthritis pain particularly its component known as curcumin which possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This approach is utilized in managing bone spurs and even osteoarthritis.

A warm compress from linseed oil can be applied on the base of the big toe for added relief. This can provide some relief to the discomfort.
