Bruised swollen eye: How is it treated?

Fact Checked

A bruised swollen eye typically occurs from trauma in an accident, sports injury or assault. This injury can occur simultaneously along with swelling. It is important to note that a bruised swollen eye might be an indication of a skull fracture.

Cold compress as a first aid measure

Apply a cold compress on a bruised swollen eye to reduce the swelling and inflammation. You can prepare a cold compress by wrapping an ice pack with a dry cloth or towel or use a bag that contains frozen vegetables.

The compress must be applied over the affected eye using gentle pressure for about 20 minutes at a time. The individual should be careful not to press on the eye to avoid additional damage. A cold compress should be applied 24-48 hours after the injury.

Warm compress

Aside from the cold compress, a warm compress works by restoring the natural color of the damaged skin. A cold compress should be used initially for 24-48 hours then switch to a warm compress.

You can prepare a warm compress by immersing a clean towel in warm water and wring out the excess. Apply the compress for about 20 minutes or when towel becomes cool. At first, the bruise will look red and then go black. After the application of a warm compress, the bruise will turn purple, yellow and brown before vanishing entirely. It might take several weeks for a bruised swollen eye to vanish fully.

Emergency care for a bruised swollen eye

Generally, it is important to seek medical care after sustaining a bruised swollen eye so that assessment and further treatment can be performed in case of other eye injuries.

If the individual starts to experience bleeding in the eye or there is buildup of blood, you should cover the eye using a clean towel or gauze and seek immediate treatment by bringing the individual to the nearest emergency department.
