Nail cuticle infections are often triggered by yeast, bacteria or fungus. This type of infection that occurs around the base of the nail is called as paronychia. The symptoms of the condition include swelling, redness and tenderness at the base of the nail and often the cuticle. The nail can become damaged, brittle or even fall off. Various treatment options can be carried out in order to treat a nail cuticle infection before the condition becomes severe. If you want to learn how to prevent infection, click here.
Pain
A commonly used treatment option is to soak the affected finger in warm water for 2-3 times in a day to reduce the chances of infection. You can add several drops of tea tree oil to the soak for additional relief. Take note that tea tree oil possesses disinfectant, antifungal and antibacterial properties. If tea tree oil is not available, you can use grapefruit seed extract which also possesses the same properties.
The hands after the soak should be thoroughly dried after every session. The nails should be protected from further pain and keep them dry by covering with plastic or rubber gloves when exposed to water. Additionally, always keep the hands dry all throughout the day.
Cleansing
The removal of any remaining debris and bacteria from the cuticle that is infected is essential. The individual should wash his/her hands using an antibacterial soap when dirty and dry them properly to prevent infection from developing. A lotion can also be applied when needed on the hands to prevent excessive dryness.
Vinegar soak
The affected finger can also be soaked in a solution of vinegar in order to reduce the growth of fungus which often aggravates the cuticles. In most cases, vinegar can also prevent the growth of certain strains of bacteria. All you have to do is to combine one part vinegar and two parts water to create a vinegar soak. The fingers should be immersed in the solution for about 15 minutes. The cuticles can be soaked in the solution on a daily basis. On the other hand, if irritation occurs, the treatment should be limited to only 2-3 times in a week. Adding more water to the solution can help reduce the irritation by diluting the vinegar.
Hangnails
Hangnails often develop around the cuticle and can cause a severe nail cuticle infection. Always remember that hangnails should be clipped off using a pair of sterile scissors. The fingers can be immersed in warm water and oil solution to help soften the hangnail. Warm water and a few drops of bath oil will help soften the hangnail and reduce the risk of irritation. Safflower oil or olive oil can be rubbed into the cuticles to prevent the development of hangnails.
