Vomiting in toddlers can be triggered by food poisoning, viruses or motion sickness. In such instances, it runs its course and settles on its own. You should try to settle the stomach of the child and start replacing lost fluids and nutrients to prevent dehydration.
Even though there is not a lot that can be done to lessen the vomiting episodes, there are some home remedies that can help settle the stomach as well as provide relief. A doctor should be consulted though if vomiting is due to an injury or other serious conditions.
Intake of fluids
Clear fluids are ideal since they are easy on the stomach and helps prevent dehydration. Provide the child with small, frequent sips of water or both. An electrolyte solution which is designed to restore lost nutrients is also suggested. Popsicles can also provide fluids in a flavorful manner.
Tea
A soothing tea such as peppermint or chamomile can be given to provide relief to the stomach upset. You can offer the tea after the toddler was able to hold down clear liquids.
If the child keeps down the tea, provide 2-3 times more throughout the day. Utilize a tea bag or leaves and infuse in a cup or mug of hot water for 5 minutes. Make sure that the tea is served warm so that the child can safely drink without any risk for burns.
Ideal foods to provide from a vomiting toddler
If the toddler just had an episode of vomiting, he/she can miss out a meal to allow the stomach to settle. Once the child has kept clear fluids down, provide him/her with easy to digest and bland foods such as saltine crackers or dry toast.
If these are kept down, allow the child to have a light amount of butter on the toast. As the child eats and keeps the food down, continue with foods that are less bland until he/she is back to normal.
